Activity 4.7 Analyzing A Film in Short

In the open scene of the newest Scream movie, the macro analysis reveals how the film makes comments on regular horror tropes while also playing into them and reflecting the fears surrounding new technology (home phones, cell phones, etc.) and personal safety especially at home (as most of Ghostface’s killings are in homes making it more intense for audience). The tension of the scene builds as the protagonist (Tara Carpenter) finds an ordinary setting of an urban household, highlighting the juxtaposition between everyday life and the potential life threating danger that is lurking within her own life, making this film scarier for audience as it proves you may not always know those who you believe you are close to( as the killers were Tara’s sister boyfriend and Tara’s best friend).
When reviewing my thoughts with my partner, Alex, we also commented on how the techniques in the film are paired with the content, and how well it was carried out/performed. I looked for any kind of micro analysis, such as specific visual or auditory examples that heighten the scene’s tension, and the effect it has on the audience.
