2-minute analysis of Insatiable
The show I chose was "Insatiable," a thriller/drama/comedy, the main character, Patty, narrates her story, which really helps us as the audience can connect with her thoughts and feelings. By hearing her thoughts, we can get a deeper understanding of her personal mental struggles. The close-up shots in the show were used multiple times to highlight different character’s emotions and expressions more clearly, making it easier for us to empathize with Patty as she deals with her environment and the pressures surrounding her, especially revolving around her looks.
The show's camera work is interesting since it always catches Patty's perspective and journey while she is in frame. For instance, the camera work creates a cheerful dolly shot of two girls running in a park, which is completely different to the pan shot of Patty in the hospital, of where she is being weighted by a doctor who is heavily judging her, which highlights her troubles. In terms of the show's camera work in the opening scene, the reverse zoom shot of Patty judging herself in the mirror is important because it expresses her mental struggle with her thoughts and the differences between how she sees herself and how other people see her.
Through media, the series further points out the value of friendship and escape. The wide angle of the room highlights their comfort in this common hobby, while the two views of Patty and her closest friend binge-watching movies together show how close they are to one another. Patty's personal problems and her legal struggles are connected through the handheld shot taken inside Patty's lawyer's office and the tracking shot of her lawyer walking to his office. Given the circumstances, these camera-based visual strategies help in explaining the themes of shame, longing, and the constant search to fit in a world that often seems like a little box.
